My father was a police officer and a US Marine. We spoke yesterday about Ferguson and for the the sake of conversation we assumed Officer Wilson first came upon Mike Brown without knowledge that he may have committed a crime and, just at the time of first contact that Officer Wilson was poorly trying to get Mike Brown out of the middle of the road and on to the sidewalk. My father wants to go with the idea that there was an altercation where Officer Wilson. My father seems to be of the understanding that the officer could have been asking Brown to get out of the middle of the street he also assumes that Brown “probably came out with some words” and the officer attempted to get out of the car and Brown would have attempted to kick the door closed on the officer and the officer wilson pulled his gun in fear. My father isn’t saying that Mike Brown started this but, he is saying that Officer Wilson was not prepared for what to do.
Example: My father from experience says that if you come up next to someone trying to get them off the street as a police officer you assume that if you open your door they are going to try to close the door on you, so you prepare for this. He also states that it is within the officers rights to draw his weapon if he feels threatened. My father assumes that this officer wasn’t trained to handle this sort of situation.
My father also state that at some point Mike Brown may have fled and this is where my father put the blame on officer Wilson. My father as a police officer in new york city, was trained that once someone is on the run, that is the moment you deescalate the situation and “He should have put his goddamn gun away and call for back up.” because “If someone is running away from you they are no longer a threat to you and also at this point the cop knows the guy isn’t armed.” also stating that “At this point he probably still doesn’t know about the robbery.”
Maybe the above is confusing. My awful father confirmed exactly what I thought. This police officer did everything wrong and willfully let this spiral out of control. There was no call for back up, at no point did he try to put his gun back in its holster, at no point did he try to think about the situation farther than the thought “I’m going to shoot this fuck.”. One last thing my father stated is that in “New York City this cop would be in jail for two reasons; he used excessive force and he is the reason that kid is dead. You don’t fire your gun six times.”, which proves to me that this cop is a murder.
